Cut and polish in the Sutherland Shire

Updated October 2026

Polishing a car bonnet by hand

If your paint looks dull in daylight, or shows a spiderweb of fine scratches under the servo lights at night, washing will not fix it. Those swirl marks and that chalky oxidation sit in the clear coat itself, and the only way to remove them is to machine polish the paint. That is a cut and polish. Shire Mobile Detailing connects you with experienced local detailers who do machine paint correction at your driveway, anywhere in the Sutherland Shire.

What a cut and polish actually does

Your paint has a clear protective layer over the colour coat. Years of automatic car washes, dirty sponges and sun leave it full of microscopic scratches that scatter light, which is why the car looks flat. A cut and polish uses a machine polisher and abrasive compounds to level a very fine amount of clear coat, removing the scratches rather than hiding them.

A typical job runs in stages:

1. Wash and decontaminate the paint, including a clay bar to pull out bonded fallout

2. Cutting stage with a heavier compound to remove swirls, oxidation and light scratches

3. Polishing stage with a finer compound to refine the finish to a deep gloss

4. A sealant or wax to protect the freshly corrected paint

A single-stage polish, where one medium compound does the whole job, suits paint in reasonable condition and costs less. Badly swirled or oxidised paint needs the full two or three stages.

What it can and cannot fix

A cut and polish removes what sits in the clear coat: swirl marks, light scratches, oxidation, water spots and holograms from poor past polishing. If a scratch catches your fingernail, it has likely gone through the clear coat, and polishing will improve it but not erase it. Paint that has peeled or burnt through, common on older cars that live outside in the Australian sun, needs a spray painter, not a polisher, and an honest detailer will say so when they see the car.

Shire cars earn their swirl marks honestly: salt air at Cronulla and Kurnell, tree sap in the leafier streets of Grays Point, and years of brush car washes. On sound paint, the difference after correction is often striking, and correction is the required first step before a ceramic coating, because a coating locks in whatever finish sits underneath it.

Mobile cut and polish, at your place

Machine polishing takes power and time, usually four to eight hours. The detailers we work with bring the machines, compounds and lighting to you. Shade is close to essential: polishing sun-hot panels is bad for the paint, so a garage, carport or shaded driveway makes a real difference. Mention what you have when you enquire.

What a cut and polish costs

Guide pricing only. In 2026, a cut and polish in the Sydney area typically runs $300 to $500 for a single-stage polish on a sedan, and more for multi-stage correction, large vehicles or badly damaged paint. The honest answer is that the paint condition sets the price, which is why the detailers we work with quote after seeing the car or photos of it. The cost guide has more on what moves the price. Frequently asked questions

Will a cut and polish remove all scratches?

It removes what sits within the clear coat, which covers most swirl marks and fine scratches. A scratch deep enough to catch a fingernail will be improved, not removed.

How often can paint be machine polished?

Each correction removes a small amount of clear coat, so paint can only be cut a limited number of times over its life. This is one reason to protect corrected paint with a sealant or coating rather than letting the swirls come back.

How long does the job take?

Around four to eight hours for most cars. A single-stage polish on good paint sits at the shorter end, multi-stage correction on a large or badly swirled car at the longer end.

Is a cut and polish worth it before selling the car?

Often, yes. Glossy, swirl-free paint photographs well and reads as a cared-for car. Many detailers bundle a polish into a pre-sale detail.
